The lamp is out, and the mountain is silent. A path that once wound downward and outward, toward the villages below, now leads only further into the wind, into the clean cold air at the summit. Here, the great cloaks of solitude are drawn up, heavy and woven for long nights. Instead of an open flame, the figure wraps himself in fabric that has sheltered sailors from storm and spray for centuries, the same wool that lined the inside of warships, the same coats found in the watchroom lockers aboard vessels moored under foreign stars.

If the upright Hermit is a guide, lantern raised, the reversed becomes a keeper of thresholds, refusing the call of voices echoing up from foothills and harbors. The sea is out of sight, but not out of mind. In the distance, beyond the ridges, there are ships in anchor, their hulls dipped in evening mist. Far below, uniforms are brushed and hung, stitched for those who cross from continent to continent, from silence into the babel of ports. These garments have endured salt and wind, the unyielding discipline of order and ritual, and yet on this mountain, they are only a second skin for one who has chosen isolation.

Morning is slow to rise. The sky is thick, heavy with the same color as the deep water outside Plymouth in January, a ceiling that presses down on the mind until it dreams not of return, but of drifting further out. There are legends of voyagers who sailed for years, never stepping ashore, making a world from their ship, their meals, their routines. Here, too, the Hermit builds a world from small, methodical acts: the folding of a pea coat at night, the pressing of a cap that never sees a parade, the slow polishing of a battered sextant no longer needed for navigation. No signals are sent, no lamps lit for others to follow.

Instead, the weather is an old companion. Storms roll over the mountain like fog on the English Channel. The lamps stay unlit, the windows shuttered, and the Hermit listens to the slow drip of condensation from the ceiling, echoing the sound of rain on hatches and deckplates. Even the food is sparse and briny, bread that cracks like tack, a wedge of preserved cheese, coffee boiled in a battered kettle whose handle is wrapped in wool thread. Every item is practical, worn, and inward-turning.

The refusal of company is its own journey. The Hermit does not call out to the ships below, nor return to the warmth of the galley or the song of the mess. Instead, he becomes one with silent watchmen, those who have stood lonely hours as the world turned unseen beneath the hull. The mountain’s cold is a familiar discipline, and the view—a wall of winter sky—is as unyielding as the iron hulls of frigates waiting for orders.

Today, you can press your coat with patience, organize the tools in your entryway, or boil a pot of strong coffee to drink quietly, with no one looking on. You may choose to write a letter and seal it, then put it away in a drawer and not send it, or simply watch the rain as it forms beads on your window and slides down out of sight.
