There is a pool, quiet and unhurried, where the water settles in its gentle basin. By its edge, someone kneels, pouring from two pitchers, one into the earth and one onto the mirrored surface. Above, a single great star shines, drawing along with it a necklace of smaller companions. This is a scene of return, of water offered back to the ground, and from above, something vast and soft stretches over all. It is a night of possibility, not with the hush of dark, but with the feeling of uplift after rain—when everything is fresh and open, and the dome of sky casts its wide protection.

In myth, such a vault is the home of distant hopes, a field over which gods and mortals both gaze upward. The pool remembers the river, and the river remembers the rain. This overhead expanse is the territory of wanderers and dreamers, of those who set out at dawn or return under the cooling daylight. For shepherds, this was the reliable shelter after a night’s worry; for sailors, the vastness overhead gave comfort even as the waters churned beneath. In places where the horizon runs unbroken—over the high steppes of Mongolia, or the rolling grasslands beyond the Volga—people saw that ceaseless roof and felt both the nearness and the distance of home.

Throughout history, that endless cover has been a sign to pause and hope. The Chinese poet wrote of lying in wheat fields, watching cranes drift beneath that open dome, and felt his heart ease from its burdens. In the Mediterranean, the open-air courtyards were built to invite the whole span above into daily life, so that prayers and breakfast bread both took place beneath its steady watch. The ancient Egyptians saw their goddess Nut arching from horizon to horizon, her body both the journey and the destination, always offering a reminder that each day’s troubles would be dissolved in that vast overhead sea.

You can bring this sense of return and comfort into your own day, even in small ways. Open the curtains wide so the arch above can fill the room, reminding you that there is always more awaiting beyond the window. Step outside after a rain shower and tip your head back, letting your eyes follow the empty, welcoming distance above. Pour water onto the roots of a plant, or into a garden bed, thinking of how each drop joins a greater cycle. Write a letter of hope or encouragement and leave it under the open air, letting whatever comes overhead carry your words further.

The feeling that stretches from the Star card is the same one that arises on a day when sunlight returns after a storm, when the overhead reaches across the world and touches everyone—farmer and traveler, reader and the one who only dreams—giving each a measure of solace. It is the certainty that, when hope is poured out, it does not disappear, but sinks in or rises up, joining the broad expanse overhead.
