The card shows a wreath, once nearly closed, loosening where it should be knotted. The figure, who has nearly circled the world, pauses in a liminal space—between the last step and the final embrace. The dance halts, the circle is breached, and the threshold stands unmet. This place between endings and beginnings is inhabited by the stone and the sky just before rain, by the ring of mountains that hem in an empty plateau. In ancient stories, these valleys were the ground of postponement, where travelers rested on flat stones smoothed by centuries of waiting.

Think of the uncarved slab that sits unnoticed at the corner of a cathedral, marked with the chisel’s beginnings but never finished. It is a monument to tasks nearly done, a gesture halted in the act. The same stillness gathers in the mist that covers fields on early mornings, blurring the path ahead and behind. There is no clarity, only the hush of indecision, the frost on the windowsill that neither melts nor thickens as dawn hesitates.

In the world’s great cities, the fog-laden riverbanks have been both border and haven. The Thames on a late November night, with its bridges barely visible, reminds us of processions that stop just short of arrival. In the myth of Avalon, the ferry slips out of sight, carrying its passenger toward a land that is always just across the water, never quite reached. History gathers here as well, in the suits of chainmail removed after battle, tossed into the corner of a tent, their purpose unfulfilled. Or in the cinders left in a smithy at dusk, when the forge is cooling but the sword remains half-shaped, neither tool nor weapon.

Inside every household, the marks of transition cluster. The old mortar that lies on the countertop, its surface worn down by pestle but not yet broken; the woolen blanket slung over the back of a chair, neither folded away nor covering cold shoulders; the teapot sitting on the stove, half-filled with yesterday’s brew. The unfinished letter on the secretary’s desk, words trailing into nothing, stands as witness. In the garden, the lichen on the north side of the stone steps grows slowly, bridging the wall and soil, never quite belonging to either.

Weather, too, lingers at this precipice. The sky before a storm gathers overhead, color of dove feathers and mountain dust, pressing low and urgent, but the rain withholds. On the coast, fishermen learn to read the sea’s hesitation, when the horizon dissolves into a thick band and the gulls wheel silently. The world holds its breath here, in the pause, as if recalling how many journeys have nearly ended before turning back.

To honor this day, walk where the mist hangs low, or sit by a threshold—door open, neither outside nor in. Write a list of tasks you have nearly finished, and pick one to complete, not all. Brew tea and drink it while it is still warm, before it cools to forgetfulness.
