Unkei and Kaikei, in wood
Wooden brows lift, and flames of gold leaf burn past the halo. The color has flaked in places. The grain of the wood comes out from under the anger. The chain is made of thick links. The two who kneel are carved from the same timber. Incense smoke follows the grooves of the carving and travels sideways, not up. In the dark of the hall your eyes meet, and the wood has already cut your name under the flaked paint.
