The Emperor sits on his stone seat, the back rigid, the arms carved with memories of every trial faced and each border defended. His gaze travels across the mountains that guard his land, their ridges marked by ancient trails and stone cairns that do not shift with the wind. In the low valleys, walls and gates define the edge of order: the garden’s fence, the marked path through a city’s square, the boundary stone set down at the crossroads. It is not the wildness that brings safety, but the pattern of stone, the custom of watching, the ceremony of opening and closing the gate.

From his vantage, the Emperor remembers the old city walls, wide enough that a pair of soldiers could march side by side. He recalls the gates painted in the color of iron and fire, lacquered so that not even the hardest rain could dull their shine. Behind those gates, a standard flies, its field set with the emblem of the ruling house. In the days of the harvest festival, teams of workers hoist banners of silk, each one a sign of allegiance and the promise that someone will defend this ground. The marketplace below is busy, but orderly; apples and pomegranates are stacked in pyramids, strings of dried peppers hang from the beams. There are chilies on the merchant’s table, wax seals pressed onto waxy documents, and a lacquered box that keeps the Emperor’s signet ring safe when not in use.

He knows the road is safer because of the sentries who wear coats the color of poppies, their uniforms easy to see from a distance. It is a warning and a reassurance at once. To pass beneath a standard of poppy cloth, or to see a warrior’s crest woven from the same strong fiber, means the law extends even to the mountain pass. The Emperor’s guard carries with him a lacquered shield, glossy with polish, reflecting the morning sun so it can signal across distances. In the household, the matron marks the start of the planting season by simmering beans and spices in a heavy clay pot, their aroma lingering as a sign of welcome. She ties her apron with strands of wool dyed in a color reserved for festival days, a mark that order brings celebration as well as safety.

Boundaries are not only stone and iron, but also custom and routine. The magistrate stamps each decree with a block of cinnabar wax, the pattern as sharp as the day the seal was carved. The trader strings together coral beads, counting each one as a step along the journey. In the border village, a torch is set at the edge of a field, its flame a signal that the night watch has begun. The Emperor’s law is not enforced by sword alone, but by these repeated marks: the sealing of a letter, the striking of a flint, the giving of a gift that marks the right of passage.

Today, order can be invited into daily life by tying a piece of poppy-colored cord around a key, setting a bowl of apples on the table, or bringing a lacquered box out to hold household contracts and promises. Another way is to simmer beans with spice, letting the scent drift out the door, an offering to anyone who stands at the threshold. These are ways to make boundaries visible, and to recall that settled procedure keeps the road.
